POINTS AT WHICH STANDARDS WILL BE ASSESSED

5th Grade Benchmarks

During 5th grade, students will be assessed to determine their progress towards survival-level proficiency in the target language. The following situational tasks have been chosen as benchmarks for assessment at the 5th grade level:

11. Describe personal appearance

12. Identify cultural celebrations

16. Describe self and family

18. Meet someone

21. Ask to use telephone and bathroom

22. Deal with classroom environment

8th Grade Benchmarks

During the 8th grade, students will be assessed again to determine their progress. The following situational tasks have been chosen as benchmarks for assessment at the 8th grade level:

6. Ask questions about a home and use its facilities

7. Purchase clothing

9. Make arrangements for an accommodation

10. Ask for and give directions to a specific destination

13. Plan leisure-time activity

15. Discuss injury or illness

19. Purchase food from the market

20. Order a meal in a restuarant

Survival-level proficiency assessment

During the high school intermediate course in the target language (for example, French III/ Spanish III), students must demonstrate survival-level proficiency in five situational tasks. The tasks for the final assessment will be chosen at random from the 22 Situational Tasks in addition to those listed above:

1. Make/ receive a reservation/ appointment/ date

2. Compare, interpret and respond to a written message

3. Explain and understand house tasks

4. Buy stamps, send and receive packages

5. Respond to and report an emergency

8. Make travel arrangements

14. React to a telephone message

17. Deal with customs and immigration

Assessment Rating: Students' proficiency will be rated as having

1) met the standard

2) not met the standard

3) exceeded the standard.
