Symphonic Band
This band consists of 68 wind and percussion instrumentalists in grades
nine
through twelve. They perform a variety of wind literature at three full
concerts each year (see 'Music Calendar').
Band is a performance ensemble which will help each
individual enhance their playing ability through individual practice,
group
sectionals and performances.
Concert Band
This band consists of 38 wind and percussion instrumentalists in grade nine or
ten.
They perform a variety of wind literature at three full
concerts each year (see 'Music Calendar').
Band is a performance ensemble which will help each
individual enhance their playing ability through individual practice,
group
sectionals and performances. The Concert Band is a non-auditioned
group.
This year, the Concert Band will be traveling to "The Great Escape" in Glens
Falls, NY
for a day of fun and the music competition.
Wind Ensemble
Wind Ensemble, our newest group with 33 members, is the most intense, and
requires
the most experience of it's participants. Emphasis is placed not only on
technical
and musical ability, but on team effort. Students will run their own
sectionals
and small chamber ensembles and will perform some pieces without a
conductor. The members of this ensemble will also have the opportunity
to study music theory (written and ear training).
Trips/Competitions
This year, 46 students and 12 adults will be traveling to Italy during the
winter break. The exact
dates are Monday, February 25 through Tuesday, March 4. We will tour Rome,
Naples,
Pompeii and Venice and will be performing three concerts.
In addition, all three bands will be performing in the VMEA
Band Festival on April 1 or 2
(depending on scheduling and location). During this festival, each band
will perform for three
adjudicators and will receive written and recorded feedback as well as a clinic
by one of the
adjudicators.
Rehearsal Behavior
This performance ensemble is a team effort and will only be successful
if every member behaves in a cooperative and attentive manner. You are
expected to be in your seat, ready with your instrument, pencil
and music, two minutes after the bell. To use the little time we have
as
full ensemble as efficiently as possible, there should be no talking or
playing unless asked to do so. As always, hats, gum, candy, food and drink
are prohibited in the band room.
Attendance at performances
Because performances are the culmination and high point of this class,
you are required to be at each performance. Please be
responsible and check the schedule of events and performances that
is in your handbook and on the "Music Calendar" page.
If, for
any reason, you are unable to attend a performance,
please let Mrs. Toner know
(in writing and sign by a parent/guardian) at least two weeks prior
to the performance or event. If you skip a performance, you will
receive
a "zero" as a test grade.

Critiques
You will be required to attend a professional area concert each semester.
You may choose the concert you would like to see, but it should be
pre-approved by Mrs. Toner. After attending the concert, complete
a written critique (click here for form) and
attach a concert program.
These critiques will count 10% of your final semester grade.
There are a variety of wonderful concerts offered in the greater
Burlington
area. Click here
if you would like to see a list of great (but free!) concerts.
PLEASE do not procrastinate! There are many concerts offered during
December and very few during January. Instead of writing a
critique, you
may decide to attend five concerts. Just make sure to turn in
all
five programs.
Grading
The following components will be considered when formulating Band grades:
*Student classroom participation 45%
*Section Playing Tests/Concerts 15%
*General theory (Quizzes) 10%
*Band music playing exam 20%
*Lessons 10%
*Instrumental proficiency exams (semester and final grade only) 20%

Lessons
All members of the SBHS
instrumental ensembles will be able to take a lesson
with Mrs. Toner or Mr. Domenick once each quarter. During these lessons, we
will work on general playing technique and the band music. The lessons will be
scheduled at your convenience during study halls or before school (remember-we
don't
start until 8:30!). Each student will be required to take a lesson and will be
given
a "Lesson Log" to keep in their folder.
Do you have questions or
suggestions? Please email Mrs. (Christina) Toner
