Although this site is still under construction, it contains much useful information and will be one to watch as it becomes more complete.

Internet Islamic History Sourcebook
 This is a wonderful site covering the history of Islamic countries from ancient times to modern. It includes links to the country studies in the area handbooks done by the Dept. of the Army.

1950's:
Fifties Website
 
This commercial site contains much useful information on the 1950's. It includes music, television, games, a pop history by year, clothing, and even a list of prices for various items.

Literature & Culture of the American 1950s 
Literature & Culture of the American 1950s - This site for an English course at the University of Pennsylvania contains a list of links to various readings on the period and links to sites about the Cold War.

 

WORLD HISTORY

Ancient World Web
 There are links here to sites dealing with ancient civilizations. Two approaches to searching are provided: "Browse the Categories" and a "Quick Search." The latter may not work that well since the search engine isn't too sophisticated.

Costume History at the Costumer's Manifesto 
 Links to information on western clothing from ancient times to the present.

Diotima: Materials for the Study of Women and Gender in the Ancient World
This site contains links to art collections all over the world containing images and information on women in ancient cultures and also provides links to translations of primary source material on women.

EMuseum 
This site from Minnesota State University at Mankato contains useful information on ancient cultures and also provides some links to other sites. Information is found here on China, Greece, Egypt, and Latin America, as well as Anglo-Saxon England and the Vikings.

Internet Ancient History Sourcebook 
This is a wonderful, scholarly resource with links to many useful and interesting sites for all areas of ancient history, including the Bible.

Seven Wonders of the Ancient World
 Information is provided on the seven wonders of the ancient world with hyperlinks to additional information. Besides the traditional seven wonders, there is a section on "Other Wonders" with links to other monuments both man-made and natural and spanning the centuries from the Colosseum to the Empire State Building and Mount Everest.

EGYPT:

Ancient Egypt 
This site is produced by the British Museum and provides useful information on Egypt. It includes the daily life of a nobleman and a farmer shown side by side for comparison, a challenge to play the game of sennet, and information on other Egyptian topics, such as the gods and goddesses, mummification, the pyramids, temples, trades, and writing.

GREECE:

The Ancient Greek World 
 This site from the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology contains topics, such as daily life, the economy, religion and death. It includes information on warfare and weapons, the Greek house and furnishings, and coinage and trade among others; these topics are illustrated with artifacts from the Museum's collections.

Perseus Digital Library
This scholarly site provides the text of ancient works for use in research. Of interest to students, are the two exhibits at the bottom of the homepage: "The Ancient Olympics" and "Hercules: Greece's Greatest Hero." These contain much useful information with links to ancient authors and illustrated with artifacts from antiquity.

ROME:

Armamentarium: The Beginner's Guide to Roman Military Equipment
 Although this was designed as a scholarly source, there is easy access to entries via the "Beginner's Guide" and "Contents" link. There is also a glossary and extensive bibliographies by subject and author.

The Forum Romanum: Exploring An Ancient Market Place
 This is a ThinkQuest site produced by a group of students. It is well-organized with useful hyperlinks.

Illustrated History of the Roman Empire
 Although some of the text is not well-written and contains some spelling errors, this site does contain much useful information in a format that is easily accessible. The Children's Section should not be disregarded, as there is information there on the most important gods illustrated with statues, the Roman house, clothing, and gladiatorial contests. Ignore the advertising and flashing banner ads.

Rome: Republic to Empire
This site was designed to provide historical background for a course, "Ancient Rome in Film, Fiction, and Fact." It is divided into two sections: "Historical Topics" including topics such as Spartacus' rebellion and "Civilization and Culture Topics" with the Roman army, clothing, etc.

Classic Myth: The Ancient Sources
There are links to pictures of the gods and goddess from ancient art and an especially useful section is a list of "Attributes in Iconography" - the symbols that help identify the individual deities, e.g. Poseidon with a trident. The "Time Line of Greek History and Literature" links to primary source documents in the Perseus database.

Encyclopedia Mythica
Search for mythology and folklore from many cultures. An image gallery containing 261 images provides pictures of gods, goddesses, etc. from the various cultures. It also contains an aid for citing the source.

Religions of the World
The Emuseum from Minnesota State University at Mankato provides useful information on world religions. Those included are Islam, Judaism, Buddhism, Animism, Christianity, and Hinduism.

MIDDLE AGES:

Castle Learning Center
 This excellent site is found on Castles-of-Britain.com which is dedicated to the study and promotion of British castles. It is rich in information on all aspects of the castle - bathing and washing, defenses, dungeons, medieval jobs, etc.

Emuseum
From Minnesota State University at Mankato this site provides useful information on the Middle Ages using a knight, a merchant, a nun and a peasant as guides.

Internet Medieval History Sourcebook 

The Labyrinth: Resources for Medieval Studies
This website from Georgetown University contains a search engine that allows you to do a keyword search or to select from a menu a topic and the type of materials that you wish to find, e.g. audio, video, course materials, etc.. It then provides links to sites with the corresponding information.

Medieval Technology Page
This site is produced by a New York University chemistry professor who teaches a course on medieval technology and everyday life. It has a Subject Index, a Timeline, and a list of References and provides information on such topics as cannons, horse shoes, house construction, silk, and the wine press.

Middle Ages: What Was It Really Like to Live in the Middle Ages?
 From the Annenberg Foundation and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, this site contains sections on feudal life, religion, homes, clothing, health, etc. and provides links to related sources.

ORB: the Online Reference Book for Medieval Studies 
This is an academic site for medieval scholars. It contains articles on a variety of medieval subjects, some of which will be useful for high school research, but the site is intended for serious researchers.

RENAISSANCE:

Elizabethan Food: A Page of References and Links for Students
