The legacy of 'dedicated Vermont students helping rural Hondurans' continued this year. From June 16 - June 31, 2003 twelve participants along with three chaperones embraced torrential rainstorms, hot days, hospitable Hondurans and a service learning project that would positively impact the community of El Mantazano, Comayagua, Honduras. In June 2001, South Burlington High School students established a relationship with El Mantazano. At that time, 2001 participants leveled a playing field, cemented that field's surface, painted an everlasting mural and led the students of Escuela de El Mantazano in a garbage campaign. Together the students of South Burlington and El Mantazano campaigned to pick up the trash in the surrounding environment. South Burlington's commitment to El Mantazano continued this past June. The '03 group painted the entire school building, built a playground, installed solar panels to run the escuela's first computer; in addition to, students made and hung signs to encourage environmental care. South Burlington High School students continue to make a difference in a diversified global community. |
