bulletWhat do I do if my child is struggling in a course?
Discuss the issues with your child so that you have a clear understanding of the problem from his/her perspective.  If he/she is comfortable, encourage your student to discuss the concerns with the teacher privately.  You and/or your child's counselor can also help in facilitating that discussion.  The teacher is really the best resource for getting to the root of the problem.  That person has information about current academic performance, work habits, and classroom behavior.  Hopefully, working as a team, a solution can be found!  If things don't seem to be improving, you may want to contact the teacher or your child's counselor to discuss the possibility of a referral to the Educational Support Team (EST).

bulletWhat do I do if there is a mistake on my child's report card?
If you believe there is a grade error, contact the teacher of the class.  It may be as simple as the teacher alerting the school registrar to do a grade change.  If it's an error in address or other personal information like spelling of a name, please contact the guidance office at 652-7060 and Ginger Phelps, the registrar, can make the correction.

bulletWho do I contact if I suspect my child is using substances?
We are fortunate to have Mariah Larkin-Danyow, who has 13 years of experience in the substance abuse field, working with us as a full-time Student Assistance Program Counselor (SAP).  She does outreach education as well as individual meetings with students.  She can also make referrals for students and their families to assessment and treatment programs.

bulletIf my child is being treated for a mental health issue (e.g., depression/anxiety/eating disorder), who needs to know?
Although everyone feels differently about how much information they want to share, it's very important that your child's counselor know the circumstances and has a release to talk with therapists or other providers about diagnosis and treatment.  Information exchanged with providers and your child's counselor is held in confidence and can help form a team with school, home and provider.  The student and their family decide what information, if any, they would like the counselor to share with teachers.

bulletWhat is the Enrichment Center and if my student is interested in accessing those services how do they go about it?
The Enrichment Center is staffed by a coordinator, Christine Lundie who is a certified special educator, several para-professionals, regular and special education teachers and UVM interns. The focus of the Enrichment Center is to provide academic support to students in need of extra help including students who are receiving special education services. The students who benefit most from this service are those who use their time effectively to get work done and ask for the help they need.
Students who have current 504, IEP or EST plans are able to avail themselves to this service. Other students who may benefit from Enrichment Center services need to go through the Educational Support Team (EST) referral process. Students can be referred to the EST by a teacher, parent, and counselor or by self-referral. Further questions about the Enrichment Center or EST can be directed to your student's counselor or see page 33 of the Student Handbook for EST information and page 9 of the Program of Studies for information on the Enrichment Center. Both of these resources are also on line at www.sbhs@sbschools.net

bulletHow can my student best prepare for mid-year exams?
Students can start by keeping organized notebooks and reviewing previous tests, quizzes and homework assignments. In addition, as testing draws closer many teachers provide study guides, study sessions after school and the library often sponsors an evening study session staffed by teacher volunteers on the Sunday night before exams.

bulletHow do I stay informed about daily activities and other high school events, marking periods, and school vacations?
This year's school calendar for events and vacations is listed on pages 7-10 of the student handbook and can also be viewed on the SBHS web site under "Resources". There is a link to the "Daily Announcements" on the SBHS home page www.sbhs@sbschools.net
