Senior Challenge

Course 035: .5 credit per semester

You’ve heard about it, but do you know what it’s all about? This is a self-designed, independent project that you select with help from your community mentor.

Senior Challenge is an exploratory, experiential project of the student's own design which is based on an area of particular interest to the student.  The student will write a formal proposal through an application form which must be approved by the faculty advisor(s).  The student will then be matched with a community mentor and spend at least 30 on-site hours; 45 total as a participant observer in that work setting.  The project will culminate in a televised presentation of the student's learning and project results.  Archives of past and present Senior Challenge projects are located at the South Burlington Community Library.

The Senior Challenge is designed to allow students to explore an area of interest about which they feel passionate.  The skills which need to be demonstrated through the project include oral and written communication, knowledge of the work world, risk taking, commitment, and independent inquiry.  This is the culminating experience in the school-to-work experiences being developed K-12.

This is a great opportunity to:

• Build a resume and gain experience in a field of interest.
• Identify college majors or fields of interest and how they may apply to your future.
• Establish connections in an area of interest.
• Receive a professionally produced DVD of your presentation that may be used to assist in the college-application process.
• Leave a lasting legacy at SBHS.

Note:  Enrollment will be dependent on the ability to schedule core time with course advisor.
