Career Academies: A Focused Approach to Learning

Sure, you go to all your classes, do your homework and get decent grades, but sometimes you wonder "What’s the point of all this?" If you are looking for more focus in your education at South Burlington High School, and have an interest in Information Technology, you are a perfect candidate for one of the new SBHS I.T. Career Academies!

What is a career academy?

A career academy is a school-within-a-school model that allows you to focus on courses and learning activities that prepare you for specific career fields. You can think of our career academies as an opportunity to declare a major in IT before you get to college. You will learn technologies currently used in the business world and work with state-of-the-art equipment and software, while pursuing your personal interests in computer networking or digital imaging.

Why would I want to enroll in a career academy?

  • Focus on your career interests; information technologies or electronic imaging.
  • Try out new learning environments.
  • Earn college credit while in high school, allowing you to complete college in less time.
  • Take part in internships with cutting-edge companies.
  • Earn industry certifications.
  • Learn within a flexible schedule.
  • Get hands-on experience by working with state-of-the-art hardware and software in school and in the workplace.
  • Create a professional portfolio.

SBHS is implementing two career academies next year, Computer Networking and Electronic Arts. Students taking part in a career academy will gain knowledge and skills that will help them as they continue their education beyond high school and in their chosen career fields.
